On June 21, 2005, the Mine Safety and Health Administration hosted Contractor Summit I, "Contractor Safety and Health Issues and Concerns in the Mining Industry", with particular emphasis on addressing everyday issues facing today's contractors in the coal mining industry. Contract work in coal mining is a multi-faceted portion of the industry, encompassing specialty work such as logging, trucking, training, and gas harvesting. Speakers from the industry voiced concerns ranging from regulations, contractor accidents and fatalities, training, substance abuse to workers' compensation. This site contains the actual slide presentations presented by each speaker at the summit. The accompanying files contain the Executive Summary and summary notes of each presentation.   • West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training – presentation given by Doug Conaway, Director, relating to contractors working in WV, their accident rates and how they are tracked
  • Kentucky Office of Mine Safety and Licensing – Director Paris Charles talked about contractors in the state of Kentucky, how they are viewed and what assistance is available to them
  • Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy – Conrad Spangler, Director for Mineral Mining, gave a speech and presentation relating to contractors in the state of Virginia, accidents, regulations and assistance offered
  • Conclusion by Ray McKinney – Mr. McKinney, Administrator for Coal Mine Safety and Health, Mine Safety and Health Administration, closed the meeting expressing his appreciation for the participants and attendees, and posed the question “Where do we go from here?”
